The Pakistan Navy League continues to honour its senior members who have crossed the age of 80 years by celebrating their birthdays at the League office. This tradition reflects the League’s deep respect for its veteran members and its commitment to preserving the bonds of fellowship within the naval fraternity. These gatherings are more than birthday celebrations. They are occasions to recognise long years of service, remember professional contributions, and express gratitude to those who helped shape the Pakistan Navy through dedication, discipline, and quiet commitment.

On 28 April 2026, the Pakistan Navy League celebrated the 81st birthday of Rear Admiral Syed Zafar Ali, P No 985, at the Navy League office. The event was attended by senior and junior members of the League, who came together to honour a respected officer and colleague. The gathering created a warm and dignified atmosphere where members shared greetings, memories, and appreciation for Rear Admiral Zafar Ali’s distinguished service.

Rear Admiral Syed Zafar Ali joined the Pakistan Navy in November 1962 and served with distinction until his retirement in 1997. His long naval career was associated with the Construction Branch, where he became one of its pioneering officers. At a time when technical specialisation and indigenous capability were still developing, officers like Rear Admiral Zafar Ali played an important role in building the foundations for future progress. His professional journey reflected both technical competence and institutional commitment.

After passing out, Rear Admiral Zafar Ali proceeded to the United Kingdom, where he completed a Ship Construction Course. This advanced training gave him strong professional grounding in shipbuilding and naval construction. On his return, he applied this knowledge in important naval projects and contributed to the growth of Pakistan Navy’s construction and shipbuilding capabilities. His work represented a valuable blend of professional learning, practical leadership, and national service.
One of the notable achievements associated with Rear Admiral Syed Zafar Ali was his supervision of the indigenous development of the first gunboat, Larkana. This was an important milestone in the Navy’s efforts to build local capacity and reduce dependence on external sources. The project required technical understanding, coordination, patience, and leadership. His role in this achievement remains a matter of pride and is remembered with respect by those familiar with the early efforts toward indigenous naval construction.

Rear Admiral Zafar Ali is also remembered for his major contribution to Karachi Shipyard. At that time, the Shipyard was passing through a difficult period and was affected by serious administrative and labour-related challenges. Union politics had weakened its efficiency and slowed its progress. Rear Admiral Zafar Ali played an instrumental role in breaking this deadlock and helping bring the Shipyard under the umbrella of the Ministry of Defence. This step proved important for restoring discipline, improving direction, and giving the Shipyard a stronger institutional framework.
His association with the Ormara project was another important part of his professional contribution. He worked closely with STFA, the Turkish company involved in the project, and assisted in matters connected with its execution. The Ormara project carried great strategic and operational importance for the Navy, and his involvement reflected the confidence placed in his technical judgment and experience. Beyond his professional achievements,
Rear Admiral Syed Zafar Ali is known among his colleagues as a very soft-spoken and courteous officer. His calm manner, humility, and measured speech have left a lasting impression on those who served with him. He represents a generation of naval officers who combined professionalism with grace, authority with humility, and service with sincerity.
During the birthday celebration, the President of the Pakistan Navy League presented Rear Admiral Syed Zafar Ali with a flower bouquet as a gesture of respect and affection. A cake-cutting ceremony followed, accompanied by applause from the members present. The moment reflected the warmth of the naval fraternity and the high regard in which Rear Admiral Zafar Ali is held.
The event concluded in a spirit of fellowship and gratitude. Members offered prayers and best wishes for Rear Admiral Syed Zafar Ali’s good health, long life, and continued happiness. The celebration was a meaningful reminder that the Pakistan Navy League remains committed to honouring its senior members, preserving their memories, and recognizing their contributions to the Pakistan Navy and the nation.
